The Before Trilogy
Three snapshots of the same relationship, nine years apart each time. Love at the beginning is terrifying and electric and fleeting. Love in the middle is complicated and loaded with everything you didn't say. Love later is hard and unglamorous and a choice you make out loud. This trilogy will wreck you in a different way each time. Not so fun fact: Before Sunrise was inspired by a real night Linklater spent with a woman named Amy Lehrhaupt in Philadelphia in 1989. He made the film partly hoping she'd see it and find him. She never showed up at a screening. Years later, while working on Before Sunset — where Jesse writes a book hoping Céline will find him — a friend of hers contacted Linklater to tell him she had died in a motorcycle accident in 1994, weeks before the first film came out. She never knew the movie existed. Before Midnight is dedicated to her.
