WhutMovie

Look, I get it. You're tired of scrolling through Netflix for 45 minutes only to rewatch The Office again. Or worse, you ask a friend for a recommendation and they say "oh you HAVE to watch this French film about a guy who stares at bread for 3 hours, it's really about capitalism."

That's not me. I'm the friend who actually watches movies and can tell you which ones are worth your precious free time. Each category is a curated list of exactly 3 films, ranked in order of "you should definitely watch this" to "okay this one's pretty good too."

No algorithms. No sponsored content. No pretentious film school takes (okay, maybe a few). Just honest recommendations with way too much explanation about why I picked them.

You wanna watch a movie, I tell you WhutMovie !

A Full War in Three Movies
War movies usually give you one thing. The heroics. The strategy. Maybe the tragedy if the director was feeling ambitious. You watch it, you feel something, and you walk away thinking you understand what happened. You don't. World War II wasn't one story. It was thousands of simultaneous ones — and most of them never made it into the history books, let alone the cinema. The three films in this category don't overlap. They don't repeat each other. Each one opens a door into a part of the war that the other two don't touch. One shows you the men who fought and bled for a country that didn't even consider them citizens. One shows you what combat actually looked like from the inside — no glory, no clean deaths. One shows you what was happening to ordinary people while the battles were being fought. Watch all three and you'll have seen more of World War II than most history classes ever bothered to cover.

The Marathon You're Ready For
A marathon sounds like a commitment. It sounds like you need to clear your weekend, stock the fridge, and mentally prepare. And honestly? You do. But not in the way you think. These aren't trilogies you watch because they're famous. They're trilogies you watch because they were built to be watched together. Three films that form one complete thing - where finishing the last one feels like putting down a book you didn't want to end. The difference between a trilogy and three movies that happen to share characters is massive. These ones have an arc. A real one. The kind where rewatching the first film after the third one hits completely differently. So clear your weekend. Make the snacks. You're ready.

No Baggage Just Feelings
Rom coms have a problem. Not the falling in love part, that's fine. The problem is the detour. You know the one. One half of the couple is already with someone, meets someone else, spends 90 minutes emotionally checked out while the audience is supposed to root for them. And somehow by the end, the original partner is the villain for not being perfect enough. I like romance. I don't like being asked to celebrate someone stringing two people along and calling it a love story. The movies in this category skipped that whole arc. The obstacle isn't a partner standing in the way. It's time, fear, circumstance, ego, or just the terrifying fact that feelings are complicated. That's more than enough. It always was. These are rom coms where the drama is real, nobody gets cheated on, and the love actually means something when it lands.

Deliciously good
Look, some movies just make you hungry. You're sitting there watching someone assemble the perfect bowl of ramen or grill a Cuban sandwich at 11pm and suddenly you hate yourself for not having planned better. So here's the idea: pick one of these, make the food, eat while you watch. A proper eat-along. Chef is obvious. Tampopo is a commitment but absolutely worth it. And Delicatessen... Actually. Maybe have a light snack for that one. These are three movies where food is the whole point. Not the backdrop, not a metaphor the director is very proud of. The actual point. One is warm and funny. One is obsessive and strange. And one is a French post-apocalyptic black comedy about a butcher who is very good at keeping his tenants fed. Bon appétit.

Fuck Romance, All Hail Bromance
Are you sick of every single movie trying to push a love interest into the plot because they fail to make their film interesting without it? Not because love is bad. Love is cool. Romance can be great. But it’s become the default shortcut, the easy solution when a movie doesn’t trust its story to stand on its own. Action, comedy, drama… somehow it all bends until it fits a couple by the end. Me? I like friendship. Friendship is cool too. Movies about people who stick around, grow together, and matter to each other without everything turning into a romance. And if that sounds refreshing, you’re in the right place.

The sports you never hear about
Some sports are relatively rare. Not because they don’t exist, but because nobody ever talks about them. This category isn’t about football, basketball, or anything you already know the rules of by accident. It’s about movies that throw you into a sport you’ve barely heard of (or never considered interesting) and somehow make you care anyway. You don’t watch these movies because you love the sport. You watch them because the movie does the hard work for you: explaining the rules, the culture, the obsession, and why it matters to the people involved. By the end, you’re emotionally invested in something you didn’t even know existed two hours ago. And honestly, that’s kind of the point.

The Breakfast Club poster

Five kids, one Saturday, one detention room, and the five clichés of hischool students on the surface. The rebel who hates everything and answers to no one. The goth girl whose entire personality is "I want to die." The nerd who does homework for fun, like an actual lunatic. The jock who's just... good at sports, that's the whole bit. And the pretty girl who, shockingly, isn't a bitch about it for once. Lock them in a room for eight hours and watch the stereotypes crack open until what's underneath is a lot messier and a lot more human than any of them let on walking in. This movie is the embodiement of Walt Whitman’s “be curious not judgmental”.

Say Anything poster

Underachiever with no plan and a crush on the class valedictorian just asks her out. No scheme, no makeover, no game. And you spend the whole movie yelling at the screen because nobody around him can see what's actually rare here: the guy is just... good. Genuinely, unglamorously good. Cares about her for real, no angle. Try finding that twice in a lifetime. There is a reason he was the Dobler from the “Dahmer - Dobler theory”. He litterally is the ideal boyfriend (not perfect, who is, but ideal).

Mr Right poster

Viewers, beware: Mr. Right is an intensely polarising movie. Either you surrender to its particular brand of insanity or you absolutely hate it. It’s a love story on drugs, a completely unhinged action comedy and, somehow, one of the sweetest films about finding someone with whom you can truly be yourself. Martha and Francis don’t merely tolerate each other’s strangeness: they recognise it, delight in it and bring out even more of it in one another. Martha, in particular, gradually stops restraining herself and blossoms into someone more confident, more unapologetically eccentric and ultimately more herself. “You’ll never be normal.” “Who wants to be normal anyway?”

Our friend poster

They say you see who your real friends are in the hard moments not the good ones. Fck me that is a friend! this movie is gonna make you cry your heart out. In it a woman gets a terminal cancer diagnosis. Heer husband, etween taking care of her and their two daughters gets overwhelmed. Their friend Dave steps up in the best of ways putting his entire life on hold to help the couple through the toughest of times. Knowing this is based on a true story makes me hope I am at least half the friend he is to the people I love.... at least two boxes of tissues required to watch this but DAMN is it a good movie!

Hacksaw ridge poster

A man who refused to touch a weapon became one of the most important people on one of the most brutal battlefields of World War II. Not despite his pacifism but because of it. Based on a true story, and you feel that weight the entire time. Sometimes the most useful person in the room is the one who decided what they stood for and never moved. Fun fact : the movie is actually a toned down version of the accomplishements of Doss. In the movie making Andrew Garfield needed a cable to help pulling the wounded soldiers (he asked it after struggling to move THE FIRST GUY). Doss however WAS SHOT IN THE LUNG before the night. HE DID IT ALL WITH ONE FUNCTIONNING LUNG!!!!

Indigènes poster

A group of North African soldiers joins the French Army during World War II, fighting through some of the war's most brutal campaigns while facing discrimination from the very country they are risking their lives to defend. Rather than focusing on generals or grand strategy, Indigènes follows ordinary men as they build friendships, endure loss, and struggle for recognition. It's a war film filled with courage, sacrifice, and frustration, but above all, it's a deeply human story about dignity and belonging. Hundreds of thousands of men from French colonies crossed the Mediterranean to liberate a country that paid them less, fed them less, and remembered them not at all. They fought the same war, in the same mud, next to men who would go home to pensions and monuments. They went home to nothing. This film told their story for the very first time. It came out in 2006, got shown at Cannes, and something rare happened, people actually did something about it. The French government, embarrassed into action, revalued the pensions of surviving veterans from former colonies and integrated their story into the history books we teach to our children. Real people. Real money. History. A film changed that, this film. Not a protest, not a lawsuit, a film.
